Ever since my freshman year, the Chapman University volleyball team has had a long-standing post-game tradition. It's late and we are hungry. What do we eat? We believe we have perfected the art of the post-game meal, and it comes in two parts!
PART 1: Pizza Press
After four hours of volleyball, including tape, stretching, pre-game rituals, and warm-up, nothing tastes better than a personalized pizza. Trust me, I've tried all the make-your-own's around. Pieology, Blaze, etc. etc. Pizza Press is my favorite and I'm not alone. Chapman students love it because what's not to love: it's a short walk down Glassell from campus, open late (1am on most nights), trendy thanks to its printing press theme, and obviously delicious. Pizza Press stands out for the quality of their ingredients and their wide selection of toppings. There are gluten-free and dairy-free options, upwards of three sauce possibilities, all the veggies and meat you could imagine, and a garnish selection to die for. HACK: flash your Chapman ID and you will receive either a discount on your order or a free drink!
My favorite combo? Normal crust with red sauce, mozzarella and gorgonzola cheeses, pepperoni and sausage, red bell peppers, both types of olives, artichoke, mushroom, kale, and a balsamic drizzle. You can top one half differently than the other if you're splitting, but I've definitely consumed a whole pizza alone, probably after a long match.
PART 2: A La Minute
Just a few steps farther down Glassell from Pizza Press is my favorite ice cream place: A La Minute. If you're like me and you like to finish off your meals with something sweet, this is the place to go and that is why it is the second part of our post-meal combo. Like Pizza Press, it is the freshness that sets it apart from other places. It is made with liquid nitrogen which gives it a creamy, rich quality and each flavor comes topped with a unique garnish. The servings might seem small, but don't be fooled. The smallest size does the trick for me and I have a bottomless stomach. In terms of decor, they always have new, trendy artwork on the walls. The cow mural pictured below is my personal favorite. HACK: flash your Chapman ID and you will get a small discount. If you're feeling it, they also bake fresh cookies so you can order an ice cream sandwich!
My go-to? As a chocolate lover, I always default to chocolate lavender. In my opinion, it just tastes like the greatest, richest form of chocolate ever. And its topped with a cacao nib-honey combo that adds a little bitter crunch. One of the things that A La Minute is praised for is their selection of unique sweet and savory flavors: avocado, beet and goat cheese, espresso chip, etc. I've tried most of them and I've never been disappointed. My second choice is always salted caramel, but my mom loves avocado! They also serve sorbet which is a total perk for my lactose-intolerant friends.
